This activity involves ascending Cerro del Caballo, a 3,011-meter peak located at the westernmost edge of Sierra Nevada, making it the southernmost and westernmost 3000m peak in the entire Iberian Peninsula.
Cerro del Caballo offers an excellent vantage point to observe not only the silhouettes of its neighboring giants – Veleta, Mulhacén, and Alcazaba – but also provides views of the Mediterranean Sea, the western coast of Granada, and the immense Lanjarón River gorge.
The terrain often requires the use of 4×4 vehicles (we can facilitate booking, not included in the price).
Sierra Nevada is a mountain range located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, in Andalusia. With an area of over 86,000 hectares, it is the highest mountain massif in the Peninsula, home to peaks rising above 3,000 meters, such as Mulhacén, the tallest in Iberia.
This mountain range is a true natural paradise, boasting a unique biodiversity in Europe and a wide variety of ecosystems and microclimates.
In Sierra Nevada, one can find everything from forests of holm oaks, gall oaks, and cork oaks, to alpine meadows and glacial lakes.
The local wildlife is also remarkably diverse, including species such as the Iberian lynx, golden eagle, Spanish ibex, and brown trout.
Sierra Nevada also holds a rich historical and cultural heritage, with signs of human presence dating back to the Bronze Age, as well as Roman and Muslim periods.
These ancient civilizations left a significant mark on the region’s architecture and culture, with numerous historic villages and monuments scattered throughout the area.
Nigüelas and its Fault
Nigüelas, a charming village in the foothills of Sierra Nevada, is located near an important geological feature: a fault line that runs through the area. This fault contributes to the unique landscape of the region, shaping the valleys, hills, and rock formations that give the area its distinctive appearance.
The Valley of the Lanjarón River
The Valley of the Lanjarón River is a picturesque and fertile area, shaped by the meandering river that flows through the region. The valley is rich in plant and animal life, with a mix of agricultural terraces, lush vegetation, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. It offers a peaceful environment and is an ideal spot for hiking and nature observation.
Stunning Views from Cerro del Caballo
Cerro del Caballo offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Sierra Nevada. From its summit, hikers are rewarded with a spectacular vista of the entire mountain range, as well as the surrounding valleys and villages. On clear days, the views stretch far across the region, offering a sense of tranquility and connection with nature.
The Refuge and Laguna del Caballo
Laguna del Caballo is a stunning glacial lake nestled in the heart of Sierra Nevada, at the foot of the imposing Cerro del Caballo. The nearby refuge provides shelter for those hiking through the area, offering a cozy and scenic resting spot amidst the rugged mountain landscape. The lake itself is a serene place to pause and take in the natural beauty of the surroundings.
Winter Landscape
In winter, Sierra Nevada transforms into a wonderland of snow-covered peaks and frozen lakes. The landscape takes on a magical quality, with the bare trees and alpine meadows blanketed in snow. The crisp air and the stillness of the winter environment create a unique experience for those exploring the area during the colder months.
Day of the Activity
After meeting in the town of Nigüelas, we’ll take a 4×4 vehicle to the Mirador Rinconada de Nigüelas, from where we’ll depart for the summit. The return journey follows the same route.
There’s also the option of departing from Lanjarón.

Publicado en upjeet Mahon21/12/2025 Dario was an outstanding guide. He took us up Mulhacén in seriously challenging snow blizzard conditions and was calm, professional, and incredibly supportive throughout. As first-time crampon users, we really appreciated how patient and reassuring he was, taking the time to help us properly and making sure we felt safe and confident at every stage. He genuinely looked after us and his experience made all the difference. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide — highly recommended. On May 20th, Dario and I climbed to the top of Mulhacén in a single day. It was a challenging hike, but the breathtaking views and excellent guidance made it absolutely worthwhile. Dario is a true professional—I highly recommend him to anyone. You'll gain a wealth of knowledge about the Sierra Nevada and Andalusia through him. Many thanks, Dario!
